DropBox

Dropxbox – Free Online Storage

Aug 30th

Dropbox is a free and fast option for syncing your files across all your computers.

Dropbox allows users to have a folder on their computer named ‘Dropbox’ Any files within the folder are uploaded to the DropBox servers. All files in this ‘Dropbox’ folder are synced to all computers you have setup on your account. The thing I like the most about DropBox is because all files are also stored on the Dropbox servers, computers can still sync even when no other computers within the account are online – It will simply sync with the Dropbox server.

The free version of Dropbox comes with a free 2GB storage space and can be bumped up to 10GB by referring friends/others. (250MB extra space for each referred user.) Premium plans are available and offer 50GB storage space for $9.99 monthly or 100GB storage space for $19.99 monthly.

Personally, I like the way that Dropbox allows me to configure it to work how I want it too. It allows me to set whether I want LAN syncing enabled, (Allows users to sync to other computers over the local area network.) whether Drobox starts when Windows is launched, what folder I want to be my Dropbox and the maximum rate at which Dropbox can download and upload.

There are other storage services available out there that will do the job but for me, Dropbox is my favourite.

DialAHost is a small based UK hosting company providing quality, affordable hosting solutions. DialAHost operate under DialANetwork Ltd who own a small-branch of other companies including DialAServer and FusedWebs.

This time, DialAHost have emailed me regarding their recent revamp of their reseller packages. They are offer 5GB disk space, 55GB monthly data transfer allowance, redundant DNS, RVSiteBuilder for yourself and clients, WHMPHP permissions to resell reseller accounts, Installatron and 99.6% uptime SLA all for a ‘nifty’ £3.50 monthly.

DialAHost look to have been trading since September 2009 according to there domain who-is info.  They have a fair few posts on internet forum boards regarding this promotion and the CEO seems very friendly over email wishing me a nice weekend.

Their redundant DNS system is looking good – Their main website appears to be using the system. One name server is located in Germany (Heztner) whilst the second name server is located in Dallas, US. (SoftLayer)

Using promotional code TWITTER you can get yourself a nice 20% recurring discount on any of the company’s reseller packages.

BurstNET, a leading provider of budget web hosting services announced its expansion and operation in the EU.

BurstNET have chosen Manchester, UK for its base of EU operations. The following email was sent out the company this morning.

SCRANTON, PA (US) / MANCHESTER (UK) – August 30, 2010 - BurstNET Technologies, Inc.™ (http://www.burst.net), a leading provider of budget web hosting services, has announced its expansion into the European hosting marketplace, with the opening of its wholly-owned subsidiary, BurstNET® Limited (http://www.burstnet.eu). To support its expansion into Europe, BurstNET® has selected Manchester, United Kingdom, for it’s European base of operations, where it will meet both international customer demand and globally redundant hosted infrastructure needs. BurstNET® aims to continue its solid expansion and to further consolidate its leading position in web hosting worldwide.

The new BurstNET® European network gives clientele access to fully redundant multi-10Gbps connectivity between BurstNET’s US and EU/UK network, as well as major Internet hubs in Manchester, London, & Amsterdam, for transit and European peering exchange access. Upon turn-up, BurstNET® immediately has one of the largest webhosting-specific networks in Europe, with many providers still operating on 1Gbps connections, rather than 10Gbps.

“The demand for our services to be expanded to other regions, particularly in Europe, has been heard loud and clear”, stated BurstNET® CEO Shawn M. Arcus. “We’ve had serious interest from our existing client base, which solidified that the time was right to move forward. We’ve had this effort in development for many months and are extremely pleased to be able to go live with our European service. We look forward to meeting the needs of our European clientele, and providing the unmatched service and support, at extremely low price points, that we have been known for in the US.”

BurstNET® has seen significant growth in its US hosting business, bringing the company to more than 10,000 dedicated and virtual private servers currently in service. Founded in 1991, BurstNET® is one of the oldest web hosting operations in the industry. The company is known as a pioneer of the Web Hosting industry, having been heavily involved in the creation of the industry standard CPanel® control panel (http://www.cpanel.net), and co-creator of the industry’s first $99 dedicated server. The company operates one of the oldest and largest resale programs in the industry, servicing thousands of resellers, as the backend for many popular hosting companies.
About BurstNET®

BurstNET®, an INC500™ Company, is a world-wide leader in Web Hosting and Internet Solutions. The privately held company, based in Scranton, Pennsylvania (USA) and Manchester (UK), services clientele in over 100 countries around the world. BurstNET® began in 1991 as a retail firm and distributorship. Shortly after incorporating in late 1996, the company quickly made the transition to providing internet services. BurstNET® established itself in the industry prior to the explosion of the web hosting market. The company has experienced exceptional growth and currently hosts 5000+ dedicated servers and co-located machines, 5000+ Virtual Private Servers (VPS), and millions of websites.
BurstNET® and BurstNET Technologies, Inc.™ are either registered trademarks or trademarks ofBurstNET Technologies, Inc.™ in the United States and/or other countries.

I wonder what this will mean for other UK providers of VPS services – Will BurstNET EU be taking all their custom?

Clean up your computer and make it run faster!

CCleaner is a neat little program to help clean up your computer and make it run faster. The program allows you to clear up space, system files and much more that clog up your computer – I ran the program on a new build of Windows (Restored only a few days ago) and was told it could clear me up around 850MB disk space – I’ve been using the program for a while now and have previously cleared up around 9GB of disk space.

The program cleans out stuff such as temporary internet files, cookies, your computer’s recycling bin (this can often hog a lot of disk space), system logs files and caches.

The program also has a neat little ‘uninstall tool’ for easily removing programs from your computer – Removing programs which you don’t use can also speed up your computer.

Under Tools, Startup you can find a editor which will allow you to change what starts up when Windows is launched. This can be useful for getting your computer to start up quicker – I wouldn’t recommend touching any programs you don’t know.

My Favourite Sites of the Month (August 2010)

So I’ve been trying to think of some interesting subjects that I can post on and have come out with my 4 favourite sites of the month.

BugMeNot.com providers users with login details provided by other users to other sites which you may not want to sign up for. I like this site for the fact that it is 100% user contributed. Users input login details for sites for others to use – Users can also rate on whether the login worked for them with a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. Logins are listed from top to bottom with logins having the highest success rate placed at the top and lowest at the bottom.

LowEndBox.com provide cheap VPS provider listings and a small paragraph about the provider. The site has been going for around 3 years now and has grown rather popular. The author of the site posted a few months back saying how he gets 27k monthly visitors and 92k page views monthly.

The site itself is hosted on a LowEndBox/VPS with only 80MB RAM. All listings on the site are available for under $7.

MeltMail.com allows you to create a temporary email forwarded which you can use for a number reasons.

You input your email address and then select how long you want your forwarded to be effective for. (3, 6, 12 or 24 hours.) After hitting create you will given your email address – No fuss. (ULJoSeE82eex@meltmail.com)

You can use the email forwarded on most sites across the internet. A blog post on the site says that Facebook have blocked the meltmail.com domain extension from being used on it’s sign-up form.
